  WELCOME

There was a vision of perfection at the Southern tip of a mysterious and beautiful continent, that windsurfers have seen in their dreams and on the pages of magazines, where a mythical table shaped mountain plunges into an azure sea, guiding a fabled trade-wind called the Cape Doctor down mile after mile of sandy shore to a bay whose horns protruded perfectly to guide the ocean swells onto it’s sandbars for the wind to transform into a legendary playground.

This vision and arena were the springboard for the Summersail Circuit in the early 1980’s where the fresh, vibrant and exciting craze of windsurfing was presented to the public and media every December for over a decade. Groupies, enthusiasts, tourists and thrill seekers flocked to the beach carnival atmosphere where the icon events of the Gunston Surfsailing International and the GTi slalom racing in and out of sometimes wild surf saw the locals pitted against the visiting rock stars off the newly formed world tour.

Thrills, spills, excitement and ever increasing level of performance were the order of the day. This vision also launched 100,000 windsurfing holidays and the seasonal migration to the windsurfing mecca Cape Town. This ever growing annual phenomena has gone full circle from a small nucleus of foreign windsurfing visitors and invitees to the current scenario of more than half the windsurfers on the water being foreign, including many of the world’s best

The vision and the arena are still there, having evolved from a gravel car park beyond the edge of suburbia to a thriving metropolis. The change and the timing are ironic yet very apt, Big Bay is evolving and competitive windsurfing is embarking on a genesis, the Big Bay classic will see the legendary past come together with the modern reality in an arena that still ranks as Legendary.

The event starts on the 1st of February and continues through to the 4th. Sailing will start as early as 1100am and will involve Wave Sailing, slalom and freestyle. For those who remember the glory days of windsurfing in it's height, come see what these athletes are doing today.
